Council rapped over planning row

A Devon council has been criticised over its handling of a planning application for a barn conversion.

The complainants had argued the granting of permission for a conversion of a barn into a holiday home near their own house was not done properly.

They said the permission had affected their amenities.

Torridge District Council has agreed to pay out £1,000 after the Local Government Ombudsman found maladministration causing injustice.

The ombudsman said approval was wrongly issued before the application had been considered by the full council.

It also said that when the application did come before the full council the meeting was not properly advised.

However the ombudsman could not conclude the application would have been refused, if it had been considered properly.
