Watchdog blasts council decision
A council has been criticised for allowing two houses to be built next door to a couple's home in Shropshire.
An initial application for the houses was refused by North Shropshire District councillors, who said they would consider a smaller development.
But they allowed a second plan with two identical sized homes, situated one metre further from the couple's home.
The Local Government Ombudsman said the decision was flawed and awarded the couple £5,000 in compensation.
Officers for the council had recommended that both applications be refused. But councillors voted to approve the second plan.
Some did so believing it would provide affordable housing for first-time buyers. But one of the houses sold for £210,000.
The ombudsman said this was an irrelevant consideration and found there had been council maladministration causing injustice.
