Council must pay out for Langtons fiasco
It was a £30,000 council mistake - but the emotional cost was far more for the 193 couples who were caught up in the Langtons wedding fiasco some two years ago.
But today (Friday) those couples who suffered anxiety and doubt about whether they were legally married believe they have been vindicated after a report into the saga by Local Government Ombudsman, Tony Redmond, found Havering Council guilty of maladministration causing injustice.
He said the Town Hall's failure to renew wedding licences at Langtons House in Billet Lane, Hornchurch, between October 24, 2004 and March 24, 2005, had been "wholly avoidable".
The council has agreed to pay compensation of £150 to each couple - a total of £28,950.
Martin Killion, 57, of Hornford Way, Rush Green, led the Langtons Registry Office Action Group in calling the council to task for the licensing mix-up.
